As a result of the Web interface developed by SPSI, customers can now log on to the Larson Company site 24/7, view descriptions of items, prices and availability, and submit orders. They can access their own account to view previous purchase orders, the amount they owe, and more. All accurate data, supplied in real time.
Real-time information was a primary reason for sticking with the proven IBM server platform. But it wasn't the only one. "The IBM eServer iSeries simply never goes down, and it has great security," attests Mr. Mirocha. "We also use other NT servers, but as good as they get, they're simply never as reliable and secure as the IBM eServer iSeries".
By sticking with its existing platform architecture, the Larson Company could reduce wear and tear on its network, and retain proprietary applications, preserving earlier IT investments while reaping rewards of the new IBM eServer iSeries technology. Even better, a massive amount of stored historical data could be brought right to their customers' fingertips.

Through personalization and content aggregation, portals provide an individual view of a company's Web site or an individual entry point to the Internet. WebSphere Portal Server for AIX®, (Portal Server) extends the capabilities of WebSphere Everyplace Suite (Everyplace Suite) by providing an open, scalable framework for enabling the aggregation of information from various content sources and applications into a personalized portal. The Portal Server framework provides predefined sample portal applications known as portlets. These portlets provide good examples of how custom portlets can be created. The predefined connectors and portlets are included with source code to allow you to easily modify them for your specific portal needs. Portal Server supports many devices, currently including PCs and selected Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) phones, in both wired and wireless networks.
Basic personalization is provided in Portal Server by accessing personalization information stored in Everyplace Suite. More advanced personalization can be provided by Portal Server when used with WebSphere Personalization.
The use of WebSphere Personalization is optional. When used, it simplifies tailoring of an individual's portal experience and maximizes the benefit of anywhere, anytime access to information.
